O.P.
Just yesterday I plugged in my phone to my computer to charge, it vibrated and said it was charging, everything is normal. A while later I notice it vibrated and turned off showing the low battery screen while it's off. I don't worry about it and want to charge it later.
Later, I plug it into the wall to charge and I notice it doesn't. I try turning it on and it doesn't turn on either. I try a soft and hard reset, no response. I try hair drying the phone and battery, no response. I try leaving it in the wall for hours, no response.
Today I take it to a mobile repair shop to see the problem, and he plugs in some kind of AC adapter to the battery compartment. Apparently there's no power flowing through the phone at all. I also took it to JBHIFI where I bought it, no surprise that their response was "buy a new phone".
It's been over a year since I bought it so the phone is no longer under warranty.
What could've caused this and what are my options?

Pretty much what they said – buy a new phone. I had issues with my 710's microphone and paid to have it fixed but faulty charging is a larger issue and it's probably better to just get a new one.

Had/have this problems with my mums 710, basically you should NEVER let it run out of charge otherwise it has problems starting up again.
One thing that has worked for me 9 times out of 10 was recharging it from a computer, that would give it enough charge to boot and then could be charged from a wall.
The time it didn't work though I had to send it in to Nokia for a repair.

It's not recognising that a device is plugged in, and nothing happens when it's plugged into either wall or computer. So yeah/

How much did that end up costing you? Or was it still under warranty

Australian stock Nokia's have 24 month warranty, and as you brought it from JBHIFI, yours is Australian stock. Go here http://www.nokia.com/au-en/support/contact/ to call or live chat Nokia to arrange the sending in of your phone for repair, as there are no longer actual Nokia stores you can physically go to for this. Good Luck.

Are you absolutely sure? Because according to the manual the warranty only goes up to 12 months for the main device. Which is the only reason why I'm considering giving it to a third party, since opening it up wouldn't void a warranty if the warranty isn't valid anymore.

Nevermind I just used the Nokia Warranty Checker and the Warranty is still valid, you were right. Thanks, luckily you saved me from voiding the warranty.

No worries, just use the link I put up earlier to get on to Nokia to discuss your repair options, maybe even try negotiate an upgrade to the 720 at a reduced cost, as they may need to fully replace the unit? Anyway, good luck, glad I could help :)

Oh wow, if that's the result of this I'd be extremely happy. Thanks though.

Well don't know what the chances are to be honest, but probably won't hurt to try, right? All they can do is say "no, we can't do that", or they may say "we'll give you XX% off a brand new 720", at least then you have an option to upgrade. Don't know unless you ask.

Well, I just called up Nokia and went through the process of printing out the information to send it away. So now all I can do is wait and see what Nokia says and then perhaps ask when they reply with the repair details. I mean, if I can't, then oh well.

Just an update on this. I called today after the repair status site strangely updated it and said repairs were complete even though they never contacted me.
According to the guy on the phone, the motherboard is broken and there's no possible way to fix it, but they're sending it away to a technician to be assessed to see if it was physical damage or not. Thing is, there's a huge crack on the front screen from 6 months back before this happened (not actually sure how it happened since it was in my pocket the whole time).
Anyway, I'm absolutely sure they're going to blame it on physical damage to get out of repairing it since the support staff on the phone made a comment after I said the crack was 6 months ago and could have no possible connection to this that, "the physical damage may have progressed" which would "void the warranty".
If they do end up doing this, what are my options? Something along the lines of contacting fair trading or if there's another specialist trading commission?

Finally got it solved !!!
I have nokia Lumia 710, my mobile battery drained out while using GPS.
And mobile was not turning on at all, tried with typical wall charger, laptop USB port, but no luck.
I googled but not found solution but an workaround to buy new battery.
mean while I purchased an Battery Pack, ( Yell BPS19 ), to avoid such problem.
I thought to try connecting it with Lumia phone. and a wonder ......
After a 2 mins, mobile vibrated, and next 2 mins empty battery sign apperaed on mobile.
in next few minutes mobile got self power on. :).
It is worth trying with other batter packs also.
I am happy about it and like to keep all Lumia 710 mobile users. hope it helps.
Regards,
Jitendra Hatkar
