Windows Phone 8 ist da – und mit dem Betriebssystem kommen auch gleich fünf neue Smartphones im Preisbereich von 300 bis 700 Euro. Aber welches Gerät ist der beste Kauf? Muss man zu einem der teuren Top-Produkte greifen oder tut es auch das günstigste Modell? Wir haben die für Kaufentscheidungen wichtigsten Kategorien der Windows Phones untersucht.
Display
Grob gesagt lassen sich die Anzeigen der fünf Smartphones in zwei Kategorien unterteilen: in hoch- und ultrahochauflösend. Wirklich schlecht ist kein WP8-Display, davon konnten wir uns bei den Präsentationen überzeugen. Und Auflösungen unter 800 × 480 Pixeln hat kein Gerät. Das gilt auch für das mit Abstand günstigste Modell HTC 8S , das immer noch auf eine Pixeldichte von 233 Pixel pro Zoll (ppi) kommt. Damit liegt es auf dem Niveau der Oberklasse von vor circa zwei bis drei Jahren.
Nach oben hin gibt es dennoch viel Luft. Anscheinend direkt proportional zum Preis geht auch die Pixeldichte und damit die Schärfe nach oben. Die Displays von Lumia 920 , 8X und Ativ S haben allesamt mehr als 300 ppi – Apple würde das Retina nennen. Das HTC 8X ist mit seinen 341 ppi sogar eines der Smartphones mit den hochauflösendsten Displays, die derzeit in Deutschland erhältlich sind. Nokia überragt mit seinem Topmodell sogar die 720p-Auflösung der beiden Konkurrenten.
Eine weitere Besonderheit hat das Ativ S zu bieten: Samsung-typisch kommt hier ein Super-AMOLED-Display zum Einsatz. Das Panel ist identisch zu dem des Android-Flaggschiffs Galaxy S3. Das sorgt für besonders kräftige Farben und quasi perfekte Kontraste. Diese Punkte werden allerdings durch den hohen Gerätepreis und eine unrealistische, weil übertriebene Farbwiedergabe erkauft.
Übrigens: Das deutlich günstigere Nokia Lumia 820 hat ebenfalls ein AMOLED-Display. Der Unterschied zum Samsung-Smartphone ist die niedrigere Display-Auflösung.
Kamera
Bei der Digicam teilen sich die fünf Geräte in drei Klassen auf. Ganz unten befindet sich das mit 300 Euro günstigste HTC 8S. Es schießt Fotos mit maximal 5 Megapixeln und hat keine Frontkamera. Die Masse der WP8-Smartphones hat eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera samt Foto-LED und eine Frontkamera mit 0,3 bis 2,1 Megapixeln.

Speicher
Interessanterweise haben sowohl bei HTC als auch bei Nokia im Gegensatz zu den günstigeren Modellen die teureren und damit vermeintlich besseren Modelle 8X und Lumia 920 keinen Speicherkartenslot. Das mit 300 Euro günstigste WP8-Phone HTC 8S benötigt den aber auch dringend, denn mit dem 4 GByte großem internen Speicher kommt man nicht wirklich weit.
Das HTC 8X kommt mit 16 GByte Speicher, das Lumia 920 mit 32 GByte. Das reicht für eine ordentliche Foto- und Musiksammlung sowie eine gute Auswahl an Apps und Spielen, ist allerdings nicht unerschöpflich: Allein das Kartenmaterial für Deutschland belegt, sofern man es komplett herunterlädt, knapp 600 MByte. Übrigens: Der Download und die Offline-Nutzung der Karten klappt auch bei Nicht-Nokia-Geräten.
Das Ativ S versteckt seinen microSD-Speicherkartenslot unter dem Akkudeckel.
Übrigens: Apps lassen sich bei Windows Phone 8 nicht auf der Speicherkarte installieren. Immerhin bietet das Betriebssystem an, Musik, Fotos und Videos auszulagern.
Funk
Großen Zuspruch erntet Nokia mit seiner uneingeschränkten LTE-Unterstützung. Beide Lumia-Modelle mit Windows Phone 8 sind mit einem Pentaband-4G-Chip ausgestattet, unterstützen also alle in Deutschland verbreiteten Frequenzen der UMTS-Nachfolgetechnik. Wer häufig tethert, sein Handy also als Modem für Notebook oder Tablet verwendet, sollte diesen Punkt unbedingt in seine Kaufentscheidung einfließen lassen – denn nicht nur die theoretischen Datenübertragungsraten sind erheblich höher. Derzeit profitieren LTE-Nutzer auch davon, dass entsprechende Endgeräte noch nicht weit verbreitet und damit die Netze nicht stark ausgelastet sind.
Den Kurzstreckenfunkstandard NFC unterstützen abgesehen vom HTC 8S alle neuen Windows-Handys. Das öffnet Tür und Tor für mobiles Bezahlen und für elektronische Tickets. Außerdem ermöglicht NFC komfortables Koppeln von kompatiblem Bluetooth-Zubehör durch einfaches Heranhalten statt umständlicher PIN-Eingabe und das Übertragen von Bildern, Web-Adressen & Co. Zugegeben, vieles davon ist noch Zukunftsmusik und mangels Verbreitung von NFC nur theoretisch von Vorteil – ein Killer-Kriterium ist diese Technologie unserer Meinung nach derzeit nicht.
Das gleiche gilt für das kabellose Aufladen des Handy-Akkus, wie es beispielsweise das Lumia 920 bietet. Wer ein entsprechendes Dock kauft – im Lieferumfang ist es nicht enthalten – lädt sein Smartphone durch Auflegen statt Einstecken. Nice to have, aber nicht zum Überleben notwendig.
HTC 8S Das HTC 8S ist nicht nur das günstigste, sondern mit einem Gewicht von 113 Gramm auch das leichteste Handy mit Windows Phone 8. Es hat ein 4 Zoll großes LC-Display mit WVGA-Auflösung, eine 5-Megapixel-Kamera, 4 GByte internen Speicher und einen microSD-Kartenslot. Mit seinem 1 GHz schnellen Dual-Core-Prozessor spielt es eine Außenseiterrolle: Alle Konkurrenten rechnen mit 1,5 GHz.
HTC 8X Das HTC 8X hat mit einer Pixeldichte von 341 ppi das schärfste Display aller Windows-Phone-8-Geräte. Die Anzeige stellt 1280 × 720 Bildpunkte bei einer Größe von 4,3 Zoll dar. Seine Hauptkamera löst 8 Megapixel auf; dazu gibt es die mit 2,1 Megapixeln hochauflösendste Frontkamera im Vergleich. Der 16 GByte große interne Speicher lässt sich nicht erweitern.
Nokia Lumia 820 Nokias Lumia 820 ist derzeit das günstigste LTE-Smartphone überhaupt. Außerdem setzt es sich mit seinem 4,3 Zoll großen AMOLED-Display vor die Konkurrenz, stellt allerdings nur WVGA-Auflösung dar. Die Kamera fotografiert mit maximal 8 Megapixel; der 8 GByte große interne Speicher lässt sich mit microSD-Karten erweitern. Auffällig ist außerdem das mit 160 Gramm überdurchschnittlich hohe Gewicht.
Nokia Lumia 920 Das Highlight des Lumia 920 ist seine Kamera: Die unter dem Namen PureView vermarktete Digicam bootet die Konkurrenz mit einem optischen Bildstabilisator und dem größten Bildsensor, der jemals bei einem Handy verbaut wurde, aus. Das soll vor allem in dunklen Umgebungen für gute Ergebnisse sorgen. Dazu ist es mit dem hochauflösendsten Display aller Windows-Phones ausgestattet und funkt, wie sein kleiner Bruder 820, im LTE-Datennetz. Der 32 GByte große Speicher ist nicht erweiterbar. Das Lumia 920 bringt 185 Gramm auf die Waage – und ist damit das schwerste aller aktuellen Windows-Handys.
Samsung Ativ S Samsung will mit seinem Ativ S an den Erfolg des Galaxy S3 anknüpfen. Dementsprechend gibt es mit dem 4,8 Zoll großen Super-AMOLED-Panel das gleiche Display wie beim koreanischen Android-Flaggschiff. Das Windows-Handy ist mit einer 8-Megapixel-Digicam ausgestattet und das einzige Windows-8-Handy, das nicht nur eine ohnehin schon ordentliche Speicherausstattung von 16 oder 32 GByte mitbringt, sondern darüber hinaus über einen microSD-Kartenslot verfügt.
Überblick: Alle Smartphones mit Windows Phone 8
Fazit
Wenn es günstig sein soll, führt kein Weg am HTC 8S vorbei. Preisvergleichsdienste listen das Gerät für 300 Euro – damit kostet es nur etwa halb so viel wie die Top-Modelle. Für 150 Euro mehr bietet das Lumia 820 immerhin schon LTE und NFC, aber auch keine höhere Display-Auflösung und keine deutlich bessere Kamera.
Wer bereit ist, deutlich mehr für sein Smartphone auszugeben, wird sich zwischen HTC 8X, Nokia Lumia 920 und Samsung Ativ S entscheiden müssen. Die reine Größe von Display und Gerät ist sicherlich Geschmackssache – wer auf große Diagonalen steht, kommt am Samsung nicht vorbei. Außerdem bekommt man hier auch noch das Super-AMOLED-Display mit seinen leuchtenden Farben und kräftigen Kontrasten. Beim HTC gefallen uns vor allem Design und Haptik, aber unterm Strich dürfte das Nokia der interessanteste Kandidat sein: Mit LTE und den Besonderheiten der Kamera hat es gleich zwei Alleinstellungsmerkmale auf seiner Seite.
